LMAO, McCain PWN3D himself!

(cross-posted at Clintonistas for Obama)

ROFL!!!

"I am so disgusted with McCain and whoever led him in that direction. He has REALLY messed in it." - my maternal grandmother, about 10 minutes ago

LOL, thank you McCain! My 71-year-old lifelong Republican grandmother is voting for OBAMA!

Do you know why? Because of PALIN. Because McCain is old. And she's afraid he'll die, which would mean a woman with no experience and no real accomplishments would become president. And my Gammy's 74-year-old church friend is also voting for Obama. They've kept it a secret between themselves (because they hate Democrats, and it's supposed to be an embarrassment to vote for one). The most pro-life people you'll ever meet. Southern Baptists. Super social conservatives, fiscally conservative. Horrified by Wright. Bought into the "Obama is a Muslim" thing for months and sent me god knows how many emails about it. Thought he might be the ANTICHRIST. Don't think we should pull out of Iraq.

And yet... they're voting for him. That's right. They're Voting. For. Barack. Obama.

"He's either an incredibly gifted liar, or he's exactly what this country needs right now. I think Obama is a different thing. I really believe what he's saying."

That was her reaction to Obama's speech last night. McCain screwed himself out of a vote with Palin. Obama WON himself a vote with his impassioned speech. I'm so excited I can barely think straight. No one in my family has EVER voted for a Democrat (except me, of course, but I don't count).

"Michelle's speech was wonderful, just wonderful. And this thing about her not being patriotic is just a lie. She's pretty much right about how blacks were treated in America."

I'm in shock. Really. In SHOCK. My 71-year-old grandmother is an Obamacan.

PS. My grandmother is from Alabama. And she used to LOVE McCain.

Re: Ain't that a miracle! (2.00 / 4)

I'm an Obamacan.  Been a registered Republican for over 30 years.  I've campaigned for the man.

Point out the state of the nation vs. 8 years ago: the nearly flat stock market performance, the erosion of the constitution, and the crappy economy, and that the price of gas has gone so high under Republican rule.

Only after a lengthy conversation about all of that do you plant the seed of voting for Obama and that you're gonna vote for the man.

You might want to load the issue with the spectre of Social Security Privatization, but see where they stand on it first.

Good Luck!

That will hurt though, (2.00 / 2)

with independents and any still disaffected PUMAs.

The PUMAs, if I understand them at all, don't want just any woman as President or Vice-president. They want the woman Hillary Clinton.

Palin's social views from initial reports seem to be 180 from those of Hillary, but appeal to the most conservative wing of the Republican party.

I don't see how Palin helps McCain with Democratic women, independents and, now that I think about it, even moderate Republicans.

That's fine...then let this be a base election. Given the enthusiasm gap, the huge number of new Democratic voters, Obama's field work, and the expected record turnout on our side, this year I'm finally comfortable enough to pit our base versus theirs.

If she's as uninformed on major issues as everyone says, then the initial burst of excitement on the repugs' side will soon fade...hopefully to be replaced by an impending sense of panic.

It's weird, but here in Ohio, the few Republicans I have spoken to think that putting a women on the ticket means Obama is toast...  that is how little they get it.  They think it's that simple... just put a woman on the ticket and women will flock in droves to support you...

I don't know what is sadder.. that they think so little of women or that some obscure polling data, which you know they did beforehand, indicated that this is true.

Gracias! (2.00 / 1)

It's my personal goal this cycle to convince at least 10 Republicans to vote for Obama. There are so many things they'll appreciate. My grandmother hates the pro-life stuff and feared he would raise taxes, but I explained the tax breaks he'll be giving and that he's just letting the Bush tax cuts expire. She thought it was wonderful. I also explained his healthcare plan to her, which she initially didn't understand at all, and she thought it was brilliant.

It's an amazing feeling to see a staunch, lifelong Republican give our nominee a chance. I'm so proud of my grandmother's open-mindedness. She's usually so set in her ways.

Everyone's decent (none / 0)

I really believe that.  So if intrinsic human decency were the defense against criticism I'd just have to let everything go.

But it isn't.  As Sen. Obama said just last night (sic)"We all care about our country!  But that doesn't make John McCain correct about how we should run it!"

I'm in favor of appropriate caveats, but I've also promised myself that I would cut back by 70% this year (seriously - it was my only NYE resolution).  So when I am criticizing someone, take it for granted that I assume they're inherently decent.  And I will criticize: anything less is dishonesty.

(not picking on you, I'm just makin' a point and this ended up being the spot for it [see?  too many caveats! ;~])

Palin is the most unqualified (2.00 / 13)

VP nominee in a long long while.  One week ago, I was going to vote for McCain.  But the VP choices of the two candidates tell be a lot about their leadership.  Obama's choice was among the best, McCain's among the worst.
I'm considering donating to Obama, although I hate his foreign policy.  But McCain is not fit to be President, not when he makes decisions like this.

I'm thinking Colin Powell is going to make the same decision. According to Al Rodgers, Brokaw said he was going to endorse on Meet the Press, but was waiting until the VPs were named. If that is the case, I can't imagine why he'd be endorsing McCain over Obama.

Re: If Palin had been a man, (2.00 / 3)

not every "unqualified"  comment directed at a woman is sexist.

based on what I know of Palin, I can say she is unqualified and it is not sexist at all

Re: If Palin had been a man, (2.00 / 1)

I don't think it is, either.  But calling her a "token" and joking about her being a "beauty queen" is sexist.  And our side of the blogosphere has gone batshit crazy today with shit like this.

I really empathize with canadian gal right now, because I HATE the GOP ticket and I would rather kiss a girl than vote for those two anti-science, anti-gay, anti-family, anti-environment RW reactionaries.  But I won't stay silent when I see sexist comments any longer.

Geraldine Ferraro was called a racist when she said that Obama's race and gender gave him an advantage in the primaries.  Yet we have no problem calling GOV. Sarah Palin a token?  As if her other accomplishments mean nothing?

I'm pissed right now for two reasons:

  1. The progressive blogosphere really disappointed me.
  2. I feel like I have to defend someone who HATES me.

Re: If Palin had been a man, (2.00 / 1)

Drew- the sexism is entirely on the Republican side- for one, thinking that putting any woman up there will appease disaffected Hillary supporters.
Palin is unvetted, unqualified and only chosen for her gender. There are certainly more qualified women in the republican party, Kay Bailey Hutchison for one (who would have made me sweat bullets had she been chosen).
It shows how desperate the McCain campaign has gotten.

Re: If Palin had been a man, (none / 0)

Hutchinson asked not to be vetted and made it clear she was not interested in the VP a while back.  Many of the other prominent women such as Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe are pro-choice.

I think that it is inappropriate to dismiss anyone as a "token."

Re: If Palin had been a man, (2.00 / 0)

I'm sorry, but McCain has been considering pro-choice men for the last month- Tom Ridge, for one, and now they're saying he was actually going for Lieberman, until yesterday.
If he had picked someone like Snowe, or Collins, the Democrats could have been in trouble.
But fortunately, he's not very smart, and neither are the morons running his campaign. I think this is going to turn sour on him very quickly.

Re: If Palin had been a man, (none / 0)

I would disagree.  There is tokenism, and no one can tell me that he didn't pick Palin because of her gender. I rarely make that assessment, but this one is so obvious. They were listening to the overblown media and thought that they could pick up "disaffected Clinton supporters", without considering that Hillary's appeal was about her competence and her work for women's issues (likewise, those who say Obama has made it this far on race overlooked the assets that we all saw Thursady night).

The was tokenism on McCain's side, pure and simple.  If he picked any number of other more qualified GOP candidates (Rice, Hutchison, Snowe, Whitman, Dole, to name a few), I would not say this.

If it helps, at least our side's sexism is mostly unintentional.

Re: If Palin had been a man, (none / 0)

yeah, I get that - I am not a fan of the Beauty Queen comment either and the pundits were laying that on thick last night

As far as token, I use the word pandering.  It is obvious to everyone by now, that McCain only put Palin on the ticket to try and sway women voters.  If Obama had picked Hillary as Veep, Palin would have never been McCain's pick at all.

I wonder if all the Media firestorm over the PUMA people made McCain think he could win by using their influence...

If so, then I have a sudden new respect for our PUMA friends and the MSM. They won the game for us by being so vocal.

Oil oil everywhere, and not a drop to drink (2.00 / 1)

The reason and probably the only reason that "the Maverick" chose such a Alaskan  rookie for the job as VP (a heart beat from the Presidency) is because his22 big oil lobbyists want to drill for oil in Alaska. Plain and simple. If McCain doesn't last for the full 4 year term........the Oil companies have a "open door"to the President of the United States....no more having to justify their policies to congress...it's card blanche to the President. This is as dangerous as havingMcCain in the White House. Making sure McCain doesn't get elected if even more critical than it was a mere 24 hours ago. His 22 oil advisers are behind thismove and the American people should know about this....we have no idea if McCain is even competent enough to know he's being manipulated. Some reportersare whispering that his memory fails from morning to night.

Great news sricki...Thanks for sharing....I was in having coffee at our local diner today (overwhelmingly anti-Obama) they were absolutely astonished at this pick, and most said there is no way they will risk national security with Palin.

McCain just lost Florida today. Sarah Palin was a staunch supporter of Pat Buchanan's GOP campaign for president in 2000.

Pat Buchanan's hatred of Israel is well-documented.

I still can't believe this pick.

Re: LMAO, McCain PWN3D himself! (2.00 / 2)

Grandma-gate!

I think Palin was the absolute best pick he could have made, in terms of uniting the conservative base, but at the same time it's an obvious pander.  He undermines the experience argument that he's been making for months, he undermines the celebrity argument that he's been making for months (seriously, someone who was a nosehair away from being Miss Alaska?), and he brings his own judgment into question.  Framing is going to be very interesting within the next few months.

Re: LMAO, McCain PWN3D himself! (none / 0)

If I were McCain (and thankfully I am not), I would have chosen Romney.  That alone might not have united the evangelical base, but it would have absolutely united the fiscals.  And the evangelicals would probably come around because they HATE Democrats and I don't see them all staying home.  So you pick Romney and definitely shore up the fiscal conservatives, and probably get many of the evangelicals anyway.  Plus Romney has experience as a Governor and actually implemented a great health care plan in Massachusetts that saved my own ass for almost a year.  If he could remind Independents of his moderate time there and give a wink-wink to conservatives that he's really just like them, that would have worked.

Count my kid in (2.00 / 2)

on this decision sealing the deal for him.  After the Obama speech he was very pro-Obama but wanted to see the GOP Convention before making up his mind 100%.  After the Palin pick he says he's got nothing more to think about.

He's 24, an Iraq veteran and pretty conservative. He came back from Iraq pretty up on McCain and put off by the Wright business.

But this Palin crap hits a raw nerve for him -- the "special standards" set for women in the military to reach the same rank or recognition.  He saw Clinton as CiC material, but not the former mayor of Ukluk.

McCain lost him too.

Re: Count my kid in (none / 0)

Yes, I see Palin at best being a draw. Maybe some will like her and vote for McCain because of it, but a whole lot will see this as a poor reflection of McCain's judgment and vote against him because of it.

Re: Count my kid in (none / 0)

GRO,

I'm gonna be honest:  I called Palin a beauty queen.  It wasn't meant to be sexist, since I would go after this meme with a man, as well, (just like Dan Quayle).

I've rethought those comments, and decided that they may have been unproductive.

At any rate, please give a pat on your son's back for me, for serving his country, and for coming home safely.

Cheers!

key points (none / 0)

The Palin choice can wound McCain badly if these points are stressed:

1. the environment  -- Palin doesn't believe human activity contributes to global warming

2. Rape and incest -- never mind being "pro-life" she doesn't want abortion in cases of rape and incest.  Who but extremists can be on board with that?

3. Polar Bears -- don't laugh.  This is a mainstream issue with almost no opposition outside of Alaska.  She doesn't want protection for POLAR BEARS??  Who the hell doesn't love Polar Bears?

4.  All things Evangelical -- the typical Independent jumps like  pithed frog at the mention of an Evangelical agenda.  Aren't these the sme folks that just gave us eight years of W?   Rightfully portray her as an Evangelical darling and McCain is toast.
