It seems that not all Republicans in Alaska approve of the McCain-Palin ticket.

The reaction wasn't so rosy elsewhere. State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to tell her the news.

"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president? said Green, a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

House Speaker John Harris, a Republican from Valdez, was also astonished at the news. He didn't want to get into the issue of her qualifications.

"She's old enough," Harris said. "She's a U.S. citizen."

To be fair, in the article a former Republican opponent does offer praise and suggests that she should not be underestimated. However, these reactions from her own colleagues are somewhat shocking and underscore various criticisms of the pick that have been discussed today.

Well, those Alaskans can be pretty independent folks, regardless of the party affiliation.

They tend to call things like they see them...damn the consequences. I like those kind of people, actually.

...like David Gergen all but says McCain's out of his mind, you know this is, perhaps, just about the dumbest freakin' political move of all time.

Begala's pretty much saying McCain's toast.

I don't think I've ever seen either of them react so extremely to a political move like this in the many years I've been watching them.

Sorry, but this os up there with every cliche' Hollywood ever produced about the Presidency.

Art doesn't have anything over real life.

Personally, I just think the situation's outright surreal...but, in a wonderful, schaedenfreude-ish kind of way.

Lyda Green and Sarah Palin are not exactly buddies. They are adversaries. I'm not sure about John Harris.

Yeah, burnin' bridges with someone who could be VP someday, is usually a bad political move.

Unless the assessment is made that Palin has no chance...

That's a pretty damning quote from Green. It's never a good thing when the State Senate President of your openly bashes you like that. It reminds me of the fights between Blagoevich and House Speaker Madigan here in Illinois.

Gee it might have something to do with the fact that Palin was involved in cutting off the gravy train for these people. That does not tend to make you many friends especially when you blow the whistle on your own party. I guess none of you have been to a real political event and seen the fighting that goes on there. Sorry to say most people are not able to get beyond the grade school stage and usually do say nasty things about each other. This would be particularly true in a state where people aren't used to the attention and haven't learned to hold their tongue for the good of the party yet.

But she thinks that shotting polar bears from helicopters is fun, and that global warming isn't real, and that we should teach creationism in school.

I believe that was wolves that she wants to shoot from planes and lots of people years ago (when she made that statement) and plenty now don't "believe" in global warming. I believe she said in a conservative state that "all theories of evolution should be taught" but we shall see how she defines herself
